Characteristics: Black body color. White pattern on face. Six legs. 

Locations: Typically found in forested areas and vegetation in urban settings. Nests often located in trees, bushes, under rock overhangs, or on sides of buildings.

Characteristics: Black and yellow stripes on head, thorax, and abdomen. Abdominal ‘V’ pattern. Curved body. Abdomen is wider than head.

Locations: Outdoor particularly during warmer months. Attracted to areas where food is present, i.e. picnic areas and parks. Forages for food in gardens: fruit trees, flowering plants, compost piles, fallen fruit, ripe vegetables. Often builds nests in wooded areas.

Locations: Open grassy areas (yards, parks). Wall voids in buildings. Most nests are built underground. Sometimes builds nests along roadsides with trees or vegetation nearby. Likes to hang out around trees.
