Are Snakes Dangerous?
Out of Florida’s 44 snake types, only six are actually venomous: the eastern coral, the southern copperhead, the cottonmouth, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the timber rattlesnake, and the dusky pygmy rattlesnake. The majority of snakes in Florida are harmless and actually helpful because they keep the rodent population under control. However, many folks still don’t want to see them slithering around in their yards.
How to Tell Florida Snakes Apart
Here are some venomous and non-venomous species you are likely to encounter in Central Florida and what they look like.
Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake: This snake is one of Florida’s most dangerous. It’s got a distinctive rattle on its tail and dark diamond-shaped markings on its back.
Black Racer: These guys are known for their jet-black color and incredible speed. They’re harmless, though, and great for keeping pests in check.
Pygmy Rattlesnake: These little guys are the most common venomous snake you’ll find in urban areas. They’re small and have dark blotches on their backs.
Southern or Banded Watersnake: These snakes like hanging out near freshwater habitats. They’ve got dark crossbands on their bodies and are harmless.
Cottonmouth or Water Moccasin: You’ll find these guys all over Florida, especially near water. They’ve got a whitish mouth lining that they’ll show when they feel threatened.
Scarlet Kingsnake: These nonvenomous snakes have bright bands of red, black, and yellow. They’re harmless and like hanging out in various habitats.
Coral Snake: The coral snake is venomous and has distinctive red, yellow, and black bands. Remember the saying, “Red touches black, friend of Jack; red touches yellow, kills a fellow.”
