What is an Armadillo?
Name: Armadillo (Dasypodidae)
Size: 15 to 17 inches long (without tail); weighs 8-117 lbs.
Characteristics: Closely related to anteaters and sloths. Has a pointed or shovel-shaped snout and small eyes. Not a rodent, but a mammal.
Habitat: Live in temperate and warm areas.
Habits:
- Dig burrows and sleeps up to 16 hours a day.
- Depends on acute sense of smell for hunting because of poor vision.
- Eats ants and termites from tunnels with their long, sticky tongues.
- Known carriers of bacteria that cause leprosy, tapeworms, and salmonella.
How Dangerous Are Armadillos?
Armadillos are a big problem for Florida homeowners because they dig and burrow through yards looking for food and shelter.
They burrow under landscaping, foundations, driveways, tree root systems, and foundations with their tunneling for shelter. This makes them one of the most destructive animals on the planet.
Armadillos are carriers of leprosy, tapeworm, and salmonella in their excrement.
Leave Armadillo Control to the Experts
If you’re thinking about removing an armadillo by yourself, we strongly encourage you to consult a professional. Handling an armadillo can be dangerous, and Florida state law requires a professional to remove it. They aren’t usually aggressive, and they may not attack you, but they are wild animals, and they can carry a variety of germs and diseases.
